Air penetrates the root ball through the openings. The plant responds to this type of "air pruning" with branching of the pruned roots and stronger root growth. The resulting dense root ball consequently has a higher number of active, white root tips. This strengthens the plant and makes it more resilient to extreme weather conditions.
